Snack sized PSF

I have been busy, you know!

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory--
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heap'd for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts when thou are gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

I realise I've been very slack, Poetry Slam Friday wise, leaving all the heavy lifting to Squib.

But in my defence, I'm a lazy, lazy man.

  1. ah, Shelley, a good old egg

What do you think about her keeping his heart in a drawer? Romantic but a bit smelly maybe

  2. In my experience, most romantics are a bit smelly anyway.

  3. Snack sized comments and all today

  4. That reminds me of my upcoming trip to Melbourne.

Speaking of which, can anyone recommend:

    1. Some very fine bookshops,
    2. Somewhere to see cheap bands/bad experimental theatre, and
    3. A good place to read the paper and have a beer on a Sunday afternoon?

  5. Roughly, where are you staying Kettle?

    CBD or suburbs?

North of the river or south?

  6. Ramon I'm staying in the CBD, north of the river.

So far I've got on my list The Book Grocer in Brunswick and a whacky Buddhist vegetarian restaurant in the city.

  7. Kettle, why not go to The Book Grocer in Northcote and there is a really great second hand book shop up the road from there called Brown and Bunting. There are plenty of cafes in High Street as well.

  8. Thanks Leilani. Two Book Grocers a suburb apart? It's like you Melbourne folk like to read or something.

I just checked out Brown and Bunting's website too; they had me at 'Books to sell? Call us for a house call.' You don't think Sydney is too far, do you?

  9. There's nothing wrong with lazy.

My flatmate said the other day that I'm exactly like his mother in that I like beer, sleep & being lazy. She was awesome as far as I'm concerned.

Anyway, is it really being lazy or are you just delegating? I like to delegate. A lot. I don't think that makes me lazy, I think that makes me smart.

  10. In fact Kettle, you could just spend the day in High Street, Northcote.

Start the day with a big breakfast and coffee while reading the papers here.

Then take the tram up the road to browse at the many, many book shops and cafes before taking lunch here where you might see some of your favourite bloggers having a quite beer in the large beer garden.

And why not finish the day watching bands here or here.

Well, that's your Melbourne visit sorted then.

  11. I think most people here are from Melbourne, but are there any from Sydney? I'm going down there for my birthday weekend, and need some ideas.

  12. Oh, and for the ladies who think George is hawt - check out the photo of him on the right hand side of the SMH site, underneath the Entertainment heading. Hilarious!

  13. Puss, he's still hawt, what a guy

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ewwww, Ramon!

I'm not denying he's usually hawt, Squib, I just think that photo is hilarious!

  15. Kettle, Ramon's given you the skinny on High Street. The only other suggestion I would throw in is Foxy Brown in South Cres, instead of Alphabet City, better beverages. They have a website.

Also I can definitely vouch for the Peacock especially for weekday lunches. They have a $10 special Mon Fri and I go there way too much. Just make sure you go around the back to the bar/beer garden and not the cafe style room at the front because they have different menus. Open fire inside, beer garden outside.

  16. I'm glad you're staying north of the river, Kettle.

People south of the river are weird and smelly.

    Apart from Melba, of course.

  17. I didn't watch the debate, Witchy.

I was too busy woofing down a delicious roast chicken dinner as wot I cooked myself.

  18. There wasn't really much to recap, Witchie. Gillard couldn't manage to talk enough about health and education, and allowed Abbott to make it all about immigration and spending. Abbott was typically negative about everything, attacking the government's policies, but not offering up any of his own (other than that horribly annoying "action contract" he kept spouting).

On the basis of those performances, I might vote Green.

  19. You still have to distribute preferences, Puss.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I know. I vote below the line, so I plan on putting everyone who supports this stupid internet filter last (and second last, and third last, etc).

  21. I can get pretty smelly Ramon, but thanks anyway.

And if you do see some bloggers in that beer garden, Kettle, and they are rustling plastic bags and talking about "quality" and "purity" and "smoothness" then they are talking about lemons instead of, oh, say, anything illegal.

  22. And here I am schlepping around Sydney when it's all happening in Northcote.

I have several days in Melbs so I can have breakfast at both the Alphabet Cafe (thank you Ramon) and Foxy Brown (merci Leilani). And Witchy, my God I'm looking forward to some chips with Euro-mayo at 4am on a Sunday morning (I have a theory that potatoes are the most perfect food-stuff on the planet, especially at 4am, and especially with Euro-mayo, and especially on a Sunday).

So the Peacock was the site of the infamous 'lemon' exchange, eh? Who am I to resist such a venue? If anyone frequents said place on weekends, lemme know (or should I say, lemony know).

  23. PS Puss, I live in Sydders. I think Surry Hills on a Saturday afternoon is a top place to be: cafes, pubs, markets. Noice.

If you're looking for a nice place for a drink in the evening, the Opera Bar is grand.

I spend most of my time around Newtown, and a good place for a drink/dinner is here.

What did you have in mind for your trip?

  24. Thanks for the advice, Kettle!

I don't really have much planned. We're going down on Friday night and seeing the Busking for Change show at the Annandale (three of my favourite artists are playing). Saturday I'm having lunch with my sister who lives there, and then Saturday night we're going out to a Spanish restaurant for dinner.

Everything in between has yet to be filled in!

My sister used to live in Surry Hills, and I visited her there once, but I don't really remember much of it.

  25. but I don't really remember much of it.

Maybe you should cut down on the recreational drugs, Puss.

  26. Ha! I just have a crap memory if it's not relevant to my interests.
