Good luck, comrades.
'And that slaughter to the Nation
Shall steam up like inspiration,
Eloquent, oracular;
A volcano heard afar.
'And these words shall then become
Like Oppression's thundered doom
Ringing through each heart and brain,
Heard again - again - again -
'Rise like Lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number -
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you -
Ye are many - they are few.'
The ABC’s Mark Colvin, on the other hand, is not so sanguine.
Danton observed “the Revolution is like Saturn, it devours its own children”.
We shall see.
Bloody good stanzas, Ramon.
ReplyDeleteOh and good on Marbarak for not stepping down because he doesn't want to cause chaos. Snort.
You can never go wrong with Shelley, Kettle.
ReplyDeleteCall me Ms Half-Empty, but I don't see good things on the horizon for Egypt - or the Middle East, generally - regardless of what happens with Mubarak.
ReplyDeleteI did like the poem, though.
They don't make poets like that anymore
ReplyDeleteAs for revolutions, I remain a pessimist
The Chinese communist politician Zhou Enlai was asked in the early 1970s whether he thought the French Revolution was a good or a bad thing.
ReplyDeleteHe's reported to have said "It's too early to tell"
Maybe somebody should ask him again.

ReplyDeleteGood news for music lovers everywhere!
ReplyDeleteThe White Stripes have just announced that they will cease performing effective immediately.
Auditions for the now vacant position of "Worst Drummer In the Universe" will be held shortly.
"Worst Drummer In the Universe"
ReplyDeleteAs judged by Ringo Starr.
From Wikipedia:
'Lennon, asked if Starr was the best drummer in the world, jokingly replied, "He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles!"'
It's highly likely that Meg was not the best drummer in the White Stripes either. She does get my vote for the best synth player in the band.
ReplyDeleteShe was just there for the incest rumours.
ReplyDeleteRamon, that's what you get for asking politicians questions.
ReplyDeleteI won't embarrass myself by saying I don't know who "The White Strripes" are, but I do have one music(ish) related question plaguing my mind:
While foraging for food today, I saw a sign saying "BURLESQUE: Starring Christina Aguilera and Cher". So, who the hell wants to see a burlesque show starring Cher?
I have a revolution question, Ramon. Can you give me a precis on what the hell is going on in Egypt? Or more precisely, why? I'm not reading the papers and am trying to stay away from news at the moment BUT would appreciate a short, clear explanation.
ReplyDeleteOh thank you.
Alex, where do you forage for food? I'm thinking a dark alley outside a nightclub with neon lights that work some of the time
ReplyDeleteI am very sad about the White Stripes End Of. I have their shirt with Tesla on the front
Not far off, Squib. Can't wait until they reopen the nice shops just down the road.
ReplyDeleteBlimey Melbs, how long do you have?
ReplyDeleteThat's why I said precis, Ramon. I don't have much time which is why I'm asking. I can't be bothered reading about it. Are you saying I should read about it.
ReplyDeleteHow about a multiple choice, tick the boxes sitch?
Is it about a long-running hated of/disillusion with Mubarak?
Is he corrupt?
Is he a baddie?
Is it about democracy?
Is it about the pyramids?
Sorry that last one was a bit glib. I AM interested.
And I know it won't be that simple, but throw me a frickin' bone here. Pleeeease?
PS Hands up who is watching Laid on Wed night? Hands up who is honest enough to admit that they'll be watching Laid on Wed night?
Ramon,
ReplyDeleteI too am interested but not enough to bother reading about it. I would appreciate you spending the time to dash off an couple of quick paras, especially if it involves pyramids. My cousin had a nasty experience with Amway a couple of years back.
Hands up who is watching Laid on Wed night?
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing the promo, I'm glad I no longer have to.
Oh that good Alex? Or that bad?
ReplyDelete*puts hand up*
ReplyDeleteThanks for the lovely card BTW, Melba
Ramon, hurry!! Mubarak in a nutshell please
I thought it looked unremarkably mediocre, Melba. But I suppose It's wrong to judge something on a thirty second ad; and I suppose it wouldn't hurt to give it a go. Maybe.
ReplyDeleteGarn Alex. Give it a go.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome squib.
I have no idea what it will be like but I'm happy to watch and see what's what.
