Well strap me vitals, another year!

Awwwwwwwww

As this blog staggers towards its third birthday, it’s usual at these times to say something gushing and faintly maudlin like “This blog couldn’t exist without the enthusiasm of all the writers and contributors. It’s you who make it special.”

So I will.

Ahem.

This blog couldn’t exist without the enthusiasm of all the writers and contributors. It’s you who make it special.

And after a year of (often furious) discussion about politics, sex, religion, bad science and owls I think I can speak for us all when I say there was one thing we can all agree upon.

And that is that Laid was actually pretty shit.

Onwards and upwards, comrades.

  2. I didn't think it was that shit

  3. OK.

There was one thing just about every body in the universe apart from Squib can agree upon.

  4. I think we should also give people something to look forward to. You know, like COMING SOON: Squib's exciting Journey to the Centre of the Earth party with giant prehistoric papier-mâché mushroom and pop-up Jules Verne invitations

  5. Sounds rad, Squib.

Please tell me Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Centre of the Earth will be on the soundtrack.

  6. No. I have "an auditory journey to the Mesozoic era" on CD. Imagine relaxing rainforest muzak interspersed with hungry raptor noises - it is so cool!

  7. Thanks for everything, everyone.

Squib: Really looking forward to it. Is there a new Journey movie, or are you going old-timey? Will you be spearing lizards with fins glued to their backs? And don't you hate mushrooms?

Ramon: After it ended, I re-watched Laid. I don't know if the dodgy pacing indicates a poorly-padded, reworked movie script, but I thought it worked much better when viewed in a single sitting. It was still on the shit side of average, though.

And speaking of religion, etc: I got a phone-call today from someone who wanted to assure me that if all the natural and man-made disasters on the news are making me anxious, God is there for me. It seems the Lord is now employing telemarketers, so beware.

  8. I didn't think it was that bad either but Ep 2 was the worst.

Isn't it time soon for one of your awesome kid parties, squib?

  9. Oh and happy anniversary and this is me, Melba BTW. I've changed my pic and name because of potential facebook trolls being mean. Long story.

  10. So long, Ms Carter. I'll miss you.

  11. Jesus Melba, that just ain't right.

  12. I read your first comment in a completely different voice to how I usually read yours.

  13. Alex, I'm basing it on the book and yes I hate mushrooms but luckily I don't have to eat this one. I was so cross when I watched that flick because they completely changed Verne's plot and characters

MG I was just wondering where you'd got to - I kind of recognized you by the Joplin pic. Party not til July

  14. I know Bob it is wrong. Maybe I'll change the pic back. What tone of voice though? Was I singing out of tune whereas I usually speak in a nasal, mid-western American accent?

  15. Squib: I can't imagine either Verne or Wells being thrilled with the cinematic adaptations they've received over the years. Are the kiddies familiar with the book or are you hoping to spark interest? Not that a party with giant mushrooms and hungry raptor growls won't stand on its own merits, I suppose; I'm already aquiver with anticipation.

MG: Thank Hera. That tiny Wonder Woman has become totally ingrained in my perception of you (much like Squib's Vo Vo and Puss In Boots' puss, um, in boot). Plus, it wouldn't be much fun to mentally append "Suffering Sappho!" to comments from tiny Janis.

  16. I know Alex she's good isn't she?

  17. Well, who else could make a hawk a dove? Or stop a war with love? Nobody, I reckon.

  18. Are the kiddies familiar with the book or are you hoping to spark interest?

No, they're not although some will have seen the last film version. LS loves dinosaurs and she's interested in rocks & volcanoes so that's why I struck on Verne

  19. she's interested in rocks & volcanoes

That's fantastic. Not enough young people seem to notice how wonderful and amazing geology is. Probably because all the cool movie scientists are into archeology and biol.

  20. The Boy is also very interested in volcanoes.

In particular, their ability to kill you horribly.

  21. Yeah, I don't know why, Alex. Maybe because they're too busy being brainwashed with fairies and crap

I just had a huge print of Charles Darwin framed for LS's room (poor child!)

Ramon, he might like this. It's really cool BUT it is from 60 Minutes (sorry, I know, I know). Not long after this was shot, the volcanologists died in a pyroclastic flow

  22. I can actually remember watching that story, back when I thought 60mins was the greatest news show ever. 20 years? Really?

    (poor child!)

No way. It's great. I think the mammoth is an especially nice touch.
