Oh Aardman, you've done it again!

Fuck, this film was funny.

As the father of an eight year old, I've seen a lot of kids' movies* so it was interesting of late to come across two interesting examples of the genre**; one shit-hot and the other just shit.

The less said about Dr Seuss' The Lorax, the better; a soulless exercise in marketing and merchandise.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits, on the other hand, had a wildness of imagination that all the best kids' films have. It was though the makers thought "yeah, bugger it, let's whack that in" to every crazy idea that came up.

Charles Darwin as a girl-obsessed, cowardly schlub? "Why not!"

A chase scene where a bath-tub full of pirates pursue Darwin and his monkey butler down a flight of stairs, after Darwin stole the last dodo? "Makes sense to me!"

Jane Austen throwing a beer stein at the Elephant Man? "Absolutely!"

And after The Pirates! Band of Misfits, I watched a film I recorded earlier about Nazi zombies.

What a top night!

* And I mean a loooooooooot of kids' films.

** Ooooh, high-brow.

It truly sounds good Ramon, esp the bits about Darwin and Austen. Too much fun. I gave up on kid movies around the time that Cars movie came out, or the superhero family one. But some of the earlier ones were gold; Lion King, Nemo and Monsters Inc particularly. And Ice Age. Luckily this waning interest/no interest has intersected with my kids getting too old for them as well. I don't know what I'll do when I have grandkids. I just won't be able to take them to the movies I suppose. Cause it's all about me.

Hope you enjoy the hols with the Boy.

You could always go and see it with your grown-up chums, Melbs.

It's that good.

How did you watch it? It's not even out?

I have my methods, Squibsie.

We tried introducing our now 18 month old to "A Muppet Christmas Carol" at this past Christmas. She got bored after 10 mins, we were enraptured to the end. Kids movies - not always for the kids!

18 months is too young Cath. Give it time.

And congrats don'tcha have another?

Perhaps Ramon is also secretly a pirate. ARR!

the superhero family one

Do you mean "The Incredibles" Melba? I thought that was one of the best kids movies I'd seen in ages.

I buy a lot of old 80s cartoons on DVD and take them to my siblings' places when I visit. It just doesn't seem right to let their kids miss out on the insane genius of stuff like Jem & The Holograms, She-Ra and G.I.Joe.

They had a premiere of the pirate one up here last Sunday, I had bought tickets at a special price but then remembered we had a birthday party to go to so I pawned them off to a kindy friend, who from your review, should be grateful!

Why yes Melbs... I have yet again procreated. Another little girl, who we have nicknamed Gremlin, as feeding her after midnight is fraught with problems. Sigh. But she is cute. That is why you keep them around I suppose.

Yes Alex, The Incredibles. Maybe I should take another look at it, I remember thinking it was okay and quite good. It was possibly more about me than the movie but it was around that time I started to let other adults take the kids to films, while biding my time to introduce Princess to Pulp Fiction etcetera.

On movies has anyone seen the Freud/Jung/Keira Knightley one? If so, is it worth my while? I have a very very strict policy re movies - ie, I can't be bothered going to see them unless they are very special. Last one I saw I think was Midnight in Paris and I wasn't disappointed. It's so easy to be disappointed with the films these days [coughs into hankie, reaches for smelling salts]

I can't stand Knightley or Freud. I plan to see This Must Be the Place (saw a trailer and it kind of reminded me of Pers, sorry!)

I share your Knightley aversion and I'm cool on Freud, but I am interested in Jung, squib. It's a dilemma.

The Incredibles is rad. I hate Keira Knightley as well. I like pirates quite a bit.
