A List

There's an outside chance that this list comprises my favourite songs of all time. I didn't allow myself to double up on any artist, the song must be at least 5 years old and they are not in order:

Space Oddity - David Bowie
Hey - The Pixies
Randy Describes Eternity - Built to Spill
Sick of You - Lou Reed
Kiss Off - Violent Femmes
Dogs - Pink Floyd
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
My Way - Frank Sinatra
Sympathy for the Devil - The Rolling Stones
Shady Lane - Pavement
I'm Waiting for the Man - Velvet Underground
Marquee Moon - Television

Jeepster - T-Rex
Boy with the Arab Strap - Belle & Sebastian
Great Leap Forwards - Billy Bragg
Parklife - Blur
Subterranean Homesick Blues - Bob Dylan
Cannonball - The Breeders
London Calling - The Clash

Buddy Holly by Weezer is my favourite in your list, Bob. It's a most rockingest song.

Nice list Bob. Id have mostly the same artists but different songs,

Pogues: Rainy night in Soho
Nick Cave: Darker with the day
Bowie: Ziggy Stardust
Velvet Underground: Heroin
Credence: Fortunate Son
Tom Waits: Ol' 55
Billy Bragg: The Homefront
Bob Dylan: Tangled up in blue
Neil Young: Helpless

Would also find room for Elvis (Always on my mind), Dinosaur Jr. (I dont think so), The Streets (Weak become heroes), Mott the Hoople (All the young dudes).

My favourite song of recent times (and potentially all time) is The Drones, Sixteed Straws.

New York is such a great album, it's a shame to pick just one track.

But I'd go for "There is No Time".

Your list and the JJJ Top 100 Ever list have something in common... only one chick (in your case, Breeders, in their case, a Massive Attack guest vocalist). I'm not saying you are bad, but I'm saying it's interesting.

So, I'd like to offer:

White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
Changed The Locks - Lucinda Williams
Gloria - Patti Smith
Heart of Glass - Blondie
To Bring You My Love - PJ Harvey
O Superman - Laurie Anderson
Washing Machine - Sonic Youth
When I Grow Up - Michelle Shocked
Werewolf - Cat Power
Your Ghost - Kristin Hersh
Funny Time Of Year - Beth Gibbons

I think VFD was my favourite michelle shocked song or maybe 5 am in amsterdam

no tracey chapman?

Why is it interesting, Pers?

Perseus said...

Are you suggesting it's not interesting Ramon? The 100 Greatest Songs Ever and not one by a chick? May I emphasise, I am not saying it is necessarily wrong, but it is interesting. I thought even the Gen Y retards that voted on JJJ may have snuck Madonna or something into it.

Lucinda Williams and Blondie would both be in my Top 10 or 15 acts, and PJ Harvey wouldn't be far off.

Oh, and my favourite album thus far this decade is 'Axes' by Electrelane - an all chick band.

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

The JJJ list is complied by half a dozen nuffies and as such has no validity what-so-ever.

Bob's list is obviously his personal choice.

My own list would have a lot more chicks in it, but that's my own personal choice as well.

Some great songs so far.

I'd add Janis Joplin's Take a little piece of my heart, Elvis' In the Ghetto and some others that I can't think of at the moment.

Thanks for drawing that to Desci's attention Perseus. I was aware of the omission but what can i say - they're my favourite songs. I love plenty, plenty of songs by chicks. Plenty. Electrelane, Blondie, St Vincent, PJ, even the B52s. They just didn't make the list.

If I'd done a list of my top 100 arses, they'd all be women.

Good list there except Stairway to Heaven which gives me the shits, especially when men play it on guitars in order to get their leg over

Interestingly Squib, and for JJJ Baggers... They played the Rolf Harris version of Stairway to Heaven this morning. Comedic Gold. Although, now I have an image of Rolf getting a leg over thanks to you Squib. And with Rolf, you know there is that extra leg.....ewww.

Will you two knock it off, I'm trying to eat my lunch here.

Bob: I also fully endorse your inclusion of 'Pig'. There's something oddly satisfying about playing that sonf at full boar in the house, and singing the lines: "I wanna be a pig -
I wanna fuck a car."

I used to think it was 'cow', which was even better.

Nice list Bob, I love so many of your artists.

B&S always brings a smile to my face, were you at the Forum in 2006 when Stuart climbed up to the balcony to get a closer look at the statues?

I have that Billy Bragg 7 inch, want it? It’s a great song, but it’s a time and place for me that’s not good so taints it sadly.

I love The Verves Bittersweet Symphony, I don’t care about the provenance, its just one of those songs that nailed it for me in a little piece of pop/rock perfection. Some Candy Talking makes that group for me too and no matter where I am or what mood I’m in, when I hear those opening cords for Town Called Malice, my feet start tapping and I’m grinning from ear to ear.

Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris doing Love Hurts always makes me cry – I’m a sooky romantic at heart. I love his Brass Buttons too and even like the Dando version (but I had a thing for Dando in 90s, him and Malkmus, but didnt all indie rock chick girls).

I can go on and on but wont.

JJJ Hot 100 Ever – Hilltop Hoods in the top 20 says enough for me to know the list is rubbish & Richard Kingsmill is prat.

Before I forget it's on the list:

I first heard The Breeders thanks to my big sister. She had Cannonball on tape and played it over and over and over on a three hour drive to our Nan's place. That was when she first got her P's and it was the start of summer and I just thought it was the coolest thing ever (the song, and summer, and getting to hang out with my sister without her calling me a little bitch).

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

Did you play air bass guitar along with that song, EMS?

It's alright - you can tell me.

Perseus said...

EMS - I saw Breeders live last year (the night I was on the dat with Artemis at which she happened to mention she had a boyfriend). They're old and daggy and no longer take drugs, but jesus they can still rock. 'Cannonball' and 'One Divine Hammer' live were awesome.

Glad Pepsi mentioned JMC - a notable absentee from Bob's list. 'Taste Of Cindy' is my pick of theirs.

Unknown said...

Ramon: Of course. But I'm a huge fan of air guitar in general. Did you know they actually have proper championships and everything? Also, I ran an air guitar competition at the school fete last year. The Vice Principal rocked out, but didn't win.

Perseus: I'll bet they were awesome. Consider me and my fourteen year old self now quite, quite jealous.

And, on an unrelated note. I lost twenty bucks today and that sucks.

Lewd Bob said...

I do love JMC's Just Like Honey.

Pepsi, I think that 7" should be the TSFKA icon. Of course, I'm happy to safeguard it.

Perseus, I always thought it was 'I wanna suck a car'. I never understood it but I sing it loud everytime anyway.

I'm visiting Melbourne next month, maybe I can stash the 7 inch somewhere & post clues on some of the blogs I visit on how to find it - a blogsphere treasure hunt?

Theres a nifty Sun City cover on the b-side too.

When I heard the opening bits of Just Like Honey at the end of Lost in Translation - I screamed like a banshee, not a good move at a cinema.

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

Pepsi, I have a fine range of sleezy dives I can introduce you to.

Pepsi said...

Go on then.

Pepsi said...

Carlton Hotel is poshed up now isnt?

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

Yup.

Lewd Bob said...

The treasure hunt idea sounds excellent. Anyone participating must speak like Billy Bragg throughout the ordeal.
