J Mascis wins a shoe for getting a new high score on Street Fighter while simultaneously eating cheezels and reading the latest Batman comic
For those of you who loved Dinosaur Jr in the 90s (and for those of you who attended one of their gigs and has consequently been reduced to 15% hearing capacity), well frontman J Mascis has released an acoustic album. He sounds like J Mascis and the music sounds like, well Dinosaur Jr gone acoustic. It works. Least I think it does. Die-hard fans will no doubt cry foul.

Wow, for a moment there it was like I'd been catapulted back to 1994. That whole "Knightfall" saga, eh?
On the other hand, I can't claim to have any nostalgic sentiment regarding Dinosaur Jr. It isn't bad, though, I suppose.
*SHO-RYU-KEN*
Mr Kettle is playing Street Fighter as I type. Our lives have barely moved since the '90s.
weirdly, I've recently written a stanza about a character from Street Fighter
Which one, Squib? Was it a hagiographic stanza?
Yes, which one, Squib? Was it Chun Li? Was it part of your feminist poem?
er, not quite, Kettle
Alex, am I that obvious?!
Alex, I've had it with Outlook. I am an email hoarder. I press reply and it takes 5 years for a box to open
I want an email thingey that will store ten billion emails and open all types of emails including old express ones. What do you suggest?
Happily, Ricky Ponting has just announced he's standing down as the captain of the Australian cricket team.
Sadly, his replacement is not me.

Chun Li would nearly have to be the first playable female in a fighting game--and she was awesome. For those of us who were part of the 16-bit console craze*, she's more of an icon than Michelle Yeoh & Cynthia Rothrock. Putting her in a feminist poem was about the coolest thing I could think of**.
*Carmageddon, released on PC in about '97, would be the last game I ever got into--brilliant stress reliever that it is.
**Could I get to read it, someday, do you think?

As for the question of email management--I'm guessing you also want something that:
1) Is a single application with a point 'n' click interface that's easy to install, configure and use.
2) Will access web-mail accounts via POP/IMAP/SMTP, as well as storing a copy of everything on your hard-drive.
3) Is NOT a full blown mail server (see points 1 & 2).
4) Will work on Windows 7.
5) Is inexpensive and preferably free.
My first thought is to have a go with Mozilla Thunderbird. If that doesn't cut it, you might have to think about ditching simplicity and using a split client/sever setup. Hope that helps.
yeah, course
Thunderbird sounded great but when I tried to install it I got "You are about to override how Thunderbird identifies this site blah security exception blah blah blah" I googled the problem but they're all talking gobbledegeek
Okay, so I've just downloaded the latest T-Bird release and it seems to work alright with all the web-mail services I tested it with (Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc).
My best guess is that one of your services is using a self-signed security certificate or something. IF YOU WANT, you can click "okay" to add a security exception. Just be aware that, if there is something dodgy afoot, there's a chance that email from that account could be intercepted by a third party (actually, there's almost always a small risk of this)--so be very careful if you're dealing with confidential information, like banking details.
I guess the reason it doesn't work is cos I still have a bigpond email and bigpond sucks eggs
I sorted out your problem, Squib, but Bogger doesn't want me to post it. Is that Hotmail address from last August still good?
yep, thanks alex
In that case, you have mail, Squib.
I should probably change the title of this post to Squib and Alex Discuss Mail.
Sorry, Bob. I suppose it was a bit discourteous of me to answer Squib's question here. We've moved the conversation behind closed doors, if it helps.

Bob I've just been mistaken for Squib twice on my own blog. I promise to write comments related to your post here if you promise to call me Kettle.
It's ok, Alex. There would've been only 3 comments on my lame J Mascis post if you hadn't.
And sure, no problems squib, er, ah, I mean, Kettle.
I did get a chuckle out of that, Kettle. Looking forward to the resolution of the movie ticket dilemma, too, by the way.
Bob, don't be so hard on your post. It still would've had that fantastic cricketing comment from Ramon that sort of got smothered. Sorry about that, Ramon.
It's taking too long to buffer but the beginning sounds nice.
Anyone going to the climate change rally at Belmore Park in Sydney tommorrow?

Was that me? Sorry. It's been a long week. And I've been doing that to everyone (literally everyone) IRL as well lately. Needs a holiday.
