Physiognomy for Beginners

Last week, I was amazed by the uncanny similarity between Tony and Pinbacker

Above: one is Shadow Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs and one is the insane captain of a spaceship full of corpses. Which man would you give your last rolo to?

Like Himmler glasses and so-called Great Depression Chic, Physiognomy is enjoying a resurgence. In February, New Scientist pointed out that Canadian ice hockey players with wide faces were more violent than Canadian ice hockey players with gaunt countenances

Can you really judge a book by its a cover? Let's find out!!

Tell me whether each person below is Liberal or Labor

The first person to get them all right or the most right will win this incredible prize: a *Charles Darwin badge, a custom badge of any person you want, and two hair buttons made by squirrels.

A.

B.

C.

D.

E.

F.

G.

H.

I.

J.

* As you may know, Darwin nearly didn't get a passage on the Beagle because according to physiognomy, his nose made him look lethargic. But in the end, his brow made up for this shortfall

Ohh, what a cracker of a challenge, Squib.

the insane captain of a spaceship full of corpses

I've never read a better analysis of Tony Abbott and the federal Liberal Party.

squib said...

Thanks

There are 5 from each party by the way

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

OK, so no Nats or Greens?

squib said...

No

squib said...

I hope you're not cheating

wari lasi said...

He'll be cheating for sure!
A, B, E H and J - Liberal?

Don't know why and I don't have time to plough through their respective websites and compare photos to all the members.

And I'm tired after a death defying Coral Sea crossing last week.

Puss In Boots said...

I have no idea who any of them are, so I'm just going to guess:

Liberal
Labor
Liberal
Labor
Labor
Liberal
Labor
Liberal
Labor
Liberal

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

A - Labor,

B - Liberal,

C - Labor,

D - Labor,

E - Liberal,

F - Labor,

G - Liberal,

H - Labor,

I - Liberal,

J - Liberal.

Melba said...

I swear I did this without looking at Ramon's BUT I HAVE EXACTLY THE SAME ANSWERS AS HIM.

So, lab, lib, lab, lab, lib, lab, lib, lab, lib, lib.

squib said...

If I was marking you all, you'd be Cs and Ds at this stage

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

Yes, but who's closest?

squib said...

Wari, Ramon, and Melba are the highest so far

Puss is last

Puss In Boots said...

Haha! Ok, my new answer is:

Labor
Liberal
Labor
Liberal
Liberal
Labor
Liberal
Labor
Liberal
Labor

Mad Cat Lady said...

Okay - will say A, D, E, F & J for Labour

wari lasi said...

I don't think you should be allowed to give more than one answer.

This is a high stakes game after all.

Sorry Puss.

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

Suffer in your jocks, Puss.

I request Julia Gillard as my custom badge of choice.

wari lasi said...

You haven't won yet Ramon!

And you still owe me a roast dinner from your ALP Constitution quote competition.

I never forget a roast dinner debt.

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

Anytime you're in the People's Republic of Preston, Wari.

squib said...

Puss, you're now neck and neck with Wari, Ramon, and Melba

MCL, sorry, you're coming very very last

Unknown said...

A. Labor
B. Liberal
C. Liberal
D. Labor
E. Labor
F. Liberal
G. Liberal
H. Labor
I. Liberal
J. Labor

squib said...

EMS, a good try! You are neck and neck with MCL

squib said...

You have until 8PM EST today or Wari wins

Mad Cat Lady said...

Last! crivens
okay all the ones I picked before except liberal this time

i don't actually know who any of them are - for shame

I generally just pick the most amusing party name when voting.

Unknown said...

I like this game. It's fun. How many goes do you get? Just in case we're allowed more than one (and sorry to disagree Wari, but I think you should be able to guess more than once - unless my second stab here puts me in a worse position than before, in which case, I'd like my first guess to be reinstated if it's closer to being correct until such time as I make a third guess, and so on and so forth), here's my next guess:

A. Labor
B. Liberal
C. Labor
D. Liberal
E. Liberal
F. Labor
G. Labor
H. Liberal
I. Labor
J. Liberal

And (do excuse me for this minor niggle, MCL, but all's fair in love and war and guessing games) but I reckon I should be beating MCL by a smidgen 'cause MCL misspelled Labor.

squib said...

MCL 8/10

EMS 6/10 As many times as you like (your first try was 2/10)

Mad Cat Lady said...

I'm going wrong on G, aren't I. she looks like a bulldog. i was very unsure about her from the start.

I like to think it's the labor party who have misspelt it. Isn't labour the english spelling? aren't we supposed to use english spelling? Aren't we their colony?

Unknown said...

Then I shall lock in my most recent guess, Eddie. I mean Squib. LOCK IT IN!

MCL: Dude, I dunno. I just thought it might score me some easy points.

Unknown said...

aren't we supposed to use english spelling?

Oh wait. Hold your horses. I know the answer to that. We're supposed to use Standard Australian English, which I'm reckoning (without having researched it or anything) would have us spell Labor as in the political party as Labor and labour as in hard labour as labour. I'm assuming they be different in Standard Australian English.

Others here must surely be more knowledgeable about this than I am though and can probably fill us in on the correct answer.

squib said...

A. Lib
B. Lab
C. Lab
D. Lib
E. Lib
F. Lab
G. Lab
H. Lab
I. Lib
J. Lib

MCL you're the winner AGAIN!! Do I send to the same address as last time? And what badge do you want?

Unknown said...

I was so sure (B) was a Liberal. I might not have won, but I reckon going from 2/10 to 6/10 is pretty freaking good.

I did have a special formula for working out my answers. I tried to figure out which ones looked more Tasmanian/"special" and just assumed they were the Liberals of the bunch.

Not exactly scientific, but the results weren't too bad considering.

Perseus said...

They all look like Mormons to me.

wari lasi said...

I'm not playing any more.

If you were only allowed one guess I would have won. But that's the 8 year old in me speaking, the humanitarian (?) in me knows that MCL needs all the loot she can get to feed all those frigging cats.

Welcome back Perseus. I trust all's well in mythology land? And Lorne of course.

Puss In Boots said...

Damn. I was working on the theory that the ones with the green background were all from the same party. Oh well.

Mad Cat Lady said...

i am quite happy for it to go to first guesses, since that means you would need to come up with a tiebreaker for Ramon and Wasi.

mwahahahahaahahahahahaha

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

I demand a recount!

wari lasi said...

Ramon and I should get a Julia Gillard badge each.

Lewd Bob said...

And I missed this!

squib said...

Wari and Ramon, if you really really want a Julia badge, I can make you one. Just email me your address

MCL,let me know if you want Glenn in your badge or wot. I'm at the same email as before... unless you don't want the prize in which case I will be mortally offended

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

Thanks Squib, you're an ace chick.

I'll put it next to Pers' tea-towel.

Address on its way.

wari lasi said...

Absolutely I want one squib. Is your email on your profile?

Mad Cat Lady said...

lol
same address :)

i was thinking maybe i should get Bob Katter or something

He's always quite amusing

squib said...

Wari, it's:

meredio [at] poetsquib [dot] com

MCL, Katter it is then...are you SURE? Also, if your hair is still short I can turn the fabric hair buttons into brooches or magnets instead (the fabric is much nicer this time)

Mad Cat Lady said...

ooo ooo ooo - brooches would be awesome - somebody at the place i am temping has assumed that since i have so many cats that i would like cat brooches and has gifted me with about eight of them. I plan to put them all on the one jacket and I need some others to balance them out :)

Melba said...

Did I not come equal first? Just because I went quiet does not mean I relinquish my rights.

But I just want acknowledgement. I don't want a badge. Unless they are really, really good.

Melba said...

And glad to see wari that you weren't on a certain plane in PNG.

Anonymous said...

D. I didn't know Tim Curry had gone into Australian politics?

wari lasi said...

Still sketchy even from here Melba. There's talk of 8 Australians being on board. I have friends who are pilots for Airlines PNG. The plane is still regarded as "missing".

wari lasi said...

Sorry, it's 9 Australians. And there's still hope they successfully landed somewhere else. APNG are not answering their phones.

squib said...

Melba you can have a badge too!!

But you will have to tell me who you want in it and where it should be sent. They are subtle little 1" badges

Melba said...

Thanks squib. In that case, I would like a badge. Can I have anyone on it? Anyone at all?

Was there mention of a Charles Darwin badge? Then I could put it with the book I got from Bob. I will then have to win a Darwin tea towel and also win myself a roast chicken dinner from Ramon. Who surprisingly will answer the door, and look like Charles Darwin.

Then my world will be complete.

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

I do indeed look a little like Charles Darwin, Melba.

A younger Charles Darwin.

Without the beard.

squib said...

Melba, yes, anyone you like

Melba said...

Thanks squib. Well, can I have Charles then please. I've emailed you my address.

Speaking of addresses I emailed Perseus my address and have not yet received the promised package.

And Ramon. I imagine you with a beard no matter what. It's not just your avatar, it's the fact you had one fairly recently so I have a stubborn picture of you in my head. Or it's stubbornly fixed in my head.

wari lasi said...

Melba, I'm yet to receive my roast dinner from Ramon. He stubbornly insists I come to Preston and collect it!

Squib is being nice and sending just about everyone in the world a badge. Her postage bill will be huge.

In PNG news, because I know you care, they've found the plane wreckage but there's very little chance anyone survived. And Emma just got home with a note from the school saying they have it on good authority that we'll have riots tomorrow and we should use our own discretion as to whether to send our kids to school.

I think I win the prize for commenting today.

squib said...

I sent Persey a book 5 months ago. I never heard if it arrived... maybe there were bushrangers outside Lorne

Yes Wari, everyone was a winner (except Puss and EMS)

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

Suffer in your jocks, EMS.

Fad MD said...

They cancel school if it rains overnight here. The Philippines has two seasons - Dry Season and Rainy Season. The school holidays are in the Dry season.

Unknown said...

Suffer in your jocks, EMS.

I don't have jocks Ramon, you oughta know that. Don't be mean. Be a playa not a h8er.

I'm ready for the next round. Oh yes.

Ebony McKenna. said...

If there are five of each, then if I guess 'they're all Labour' then I'll get at least 50%!

so
Labour
Labour
Labour
Labour

Labour
Labour
Labour
Labour
Labour (possibly New Labour?)

Puss In Boots said...

Yes Wari, everyone was a winner (except Puss and EMS)

I never win anything. And here is where I would use a sad smiley face if I resorted to emoticons.
