I am a sentimental old lefty.

As we come marching, marching in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing: "Bread and roses! Bread and roses!"

As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men,
For they are women's children, and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!

As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient cry for bread.
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew.
Yes, it is bread we fight for -- but we fight for roses, too!

As we come marching, marching, we bring the greater days.
The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
No more the drudge and idler -- ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life's glories: Bread and roses! Bread and roses!

Good one.

I lose the rhythm every time on Stanza 3 Line 2.

And does 'race' rhyme with 'days'?

Is that an oblique rhyme? Is that what it's called?

Why a I here? Where did I come from?

And so on.

but instead, all we get is bread and circuses! Bread and circuses!

Circuses shit me.

Circus Oz shits me even more.

Here hear! A rabble rousing anthem. More Beer!

Cirque de Soleil shits me even more than Circus Oz. The Cirque de S is a franchise; a ruddy franchise! All the bread coming out of that enterprise is completely rose-less.

I love circi, but only the old ones. All the new ones shit me.

No animals? Fuck off. Trapeze with safety ropes? Double fuck off.

Melba, ever since I can remember, I've found the idea of circus animals sort of depressing - some exotic beasty getting carted about the countryside so that people can watch it jump through hoops in a funny hat.

On the other hand, I do love watching acrobats. Whether it's a circus, high level gymnastics, Chinese opera, whatever. Absolutely love it.

Crap acrobats are a bit sad though.

I agree Alex. It's indeed a very depressing thing.

I love Cirque du Soleil precisely because there are no animals. I've been to most of the Cirque shows, and I've loved them all.

I remember my first time going to the circus (Ashtons?). I must have been 7 or 8 I suppose and I said to my mother that the elephant looked really sad. It did. It's the thing I remember most about the day.

I agree about the animals and I know it's politically incorrect to admit it, but the child inside tells me that a circus is not a real circus without them.

I'm also intrigued by the freak shows of old.

So, all round bad taste from me on this subject I guess.

Cirque de Soleil shits me even more than Circus Oz. And the shittiest of all, The Women's Circus.

I way prefer Cirque de Soleil, precisely because it showcases human skill and ingenuity in performance and acrobatics.

Animal circuses I have no time for, because the attraction is solely, "Let's see what freakish things we can force a bunch of dumb animals to do for your amusement". And besides which, animal circuses are notorious for mistreating their animals.

But really, the most humiliating, degrading, soul-deadening circus of them all is the public circus.

I love the circus but also find performing animals so depressing. Once I walked past the site of a circus during the day and two elephants were in an enclosure, on their own, doing their dance moves. It was such a sad, sad sight.

One of the best circus themed acts I've ever seen were Shenzo's Stunt Orchestra from Brisbane, they were in Melbourne for the cultural program of the Comm Games and they were great fun. Musical instruments and trapeze work are better than dancing elephants.

I should explain my disdain extends to all circuses bu the air of moral smugness around Circus Oz irks me no end.

Oh gawd, Catlick, The Women's Circus.

Nothing undermines capitalism like a bunch of 40 year old Trots from North Fitzroy working on their tumbling skills.

The Cirque de Soleil is about three hours too long

I like the small family-run circuses with animals. I'm sure you will find much worse animal cruelty in the racing world or on your plate

But the problem with all circuses is the happy clowns. CREEPY!!

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

I would pay good money for any circus where clowns are locked in a cage and poked with sticks by small children.

squib said...

I'm not that sadistic, Ramon. I would just take them out in a boat and sink them

I hate circuses for two reasons:

1) The clowns, those creepy bastards; and
2) When I when to the circus for the first time at age seven I lost my favourite ever headband.

It was a red alice band and it had two yellow plastic bows on it and the two yellow plastic bows had red polka dots on them.

If you've seen it, let me know.
