Charles Darwin was never called an arsehole

Ladies, form a queue

Or, Do intelligent people get more roots?

Last night I was watching the excellent doco Judgement Day: Intelligent Design on trial on SBS – which, BTW, is a comprehensive thumping of the Intelligent Design bollocks – when a sudden thought struck me.

“I wonder what Darwin’s sex life would be like if he was alive today?”

Picture the scene;

A nightclub in Melbourne* when a familiar figure sidles up to two Goth chicks chatting at the bar.

Charles Darwin (for it is indeed he) “Splendid Gothic ladies, I am Charles Darwin, the driving intellectual force behind the theory of natural selection. May I buy you both a drink?”

First Goth chick: “Charles Darwin! I’m going to take you home and ride you like a pony!”

Second Goth chick: “Hands off, scrag. I saw him first”

FGC: “Visigoth!”

SGC: “Heretic!”

Charles Darwin: “Ladies, please. There’s more than enough Charles Darwin to go around.”

Goth chicks: “Thanks Charles Darwin. No wonder you’re widely regarded as one of the modern world’s most important intellectuals.”

Am I onto something here? Or do I need to increase my meds?

*Or indeed, in Darwin - if you prefer.

I wish I'd seen that doco Ramon. How heavily did Dawkins figure?

After reading The God Delusion I can't see how any person claiming to have one iota of intelligence could push the argument from design seriously.

Can we have a religious nutjob pay us a visit today? That would be really good fun. I'd particularly like to see Boogey do a demolition job on someone while I'm actually agreeing with him.

And incidentally, Darwin was called far worse than an arsehole in his time.

From memory wari, Richard Dawkins didn't feature at all.

The doco followed a case in the US Supreme Court where a group of parents objected to the local school board instructions that ID be taught in the science class.

Part Two is on next Sunday night.

And the question is, would Charles Darwin be called an arsehole now.

Well I'm pretty sure when they went back to his place he'd dim the lights and play that reggae gem The Genomic Dub Collective

Well Darwin just a show dem, seh, the same DNA what control the plants and the animal a de same DNA dat control I an' I...

While the goth girls would turn the colour of an avocado, I'd buy him a beer.

I read something recently where the ID crowd have pulled a load of money from the religious right.

I'll try to catch it next Sunday but we're entering Christmas Party Season here now and in true expat style all the functions are over the top. If you happen to be in Moresby this weekend the Yacht Club party is on at Fisherman's Island this Sunday. Not to be missed.

I'd buy him a beer.

Even though he was an agnostic, Pers?

I suggest his agnosticism would have crumbled once Watson & Crick confirmed his theory.

I hoping SBS will announce that Part2 has been replaced by a fitter program, more suited to its surroundings.

Mr E, the SBS doco is prefectly adapted to its environment.

Its lack of nautral preditors means this shy, magnificent creature thrives at an 8:30 Sunday night time slot.

And in breaking entertainment news, the Age reports Australia is tanking in the U.S.

The paper notes

"Instead of buying tickets to the epic set in outback Australia and Darwin, cinemagoers preferred the new Reese Witherspoon Christmas comedy Four Holidays, the teen vampire film Twilight, the new Disney animated movie Bolt and the latest James Bond flick, Quantum of Solace"

Feedback from punters indicating they think the film is "crap" and Nicole Kidman is "creepy" also believed to be a factor.

and Nicole Kidman is "creepy"

Aint that the truth. She just gets worse and worse. I think I've said before she looks like she died a while ago and won't lie down.

Jack Marx's blog at News has an excellent list of the "rave reviews" Oz has received in the US. And his final instalment of the Martyr's Diary is worth a read too.

Why are you here banging on about Nicole when you could be in the other spot commenting on Jenna Jameson in a Tigers bra?

And where's the weather update, Wari?

wari lasi said...

Raining in Pom as we "speak" Melba. It's the wet season so to be expected, at least we've had some respite from the heat.

Jenna Jameson here I come.

Darwin would be hung, drawn and quartered in this day and age. Or locked up as a nutjob.

I'd particularly like to see Boogey do a demolition job on someone while I'm actually agreeing with him.

But, I already did that to Perseus the other day while you were agreeing with him. Isn't that what you want?

WitchOne said...

He wants to agree with YOU you're while you're demolishing someone.

Darwin would be hung, drawn and quartered in this day and age.

Why?

wari lasi said...

Thanks for clarifying that Witchie.

From distant memory Ramon (I have haven't studied in recent years), he was fairly outspoken and his views were not considered hugely popular.

I think we need to specify whether or not, in your theoretical postulation, Darwinism has already been accepted or if he was just starting out and trying to get his point of view across...

If it is the former, I'm sure the scenario, complete with goth chicks and Perseus buying him a beer afterwards would not be out of the question. However, if it is the latter, I'm inclined to the hung, drawn and quartered theory of WitchOne's*

*BTW: New post (finally) up on our blog, go go go people ;P

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

Aesophia, very much the former.

Admit it, you've got a wide-on for some hawt Charles Darwin lovin' right now - haven't you?

Natasha said...

*shudder*

And most definitely not in a good way.

Natasha said...

And have I been in a small window-less room for the last decade...? Am I the only one here who has never heard the term 'wide-on' before?

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

Am I the only one here who has never heard the term 'wide-on' before?

Yes, Aesophia. Yes, you are.

I therefore conclude you been in a small window-less room for the last decade

squib said...

Can someone tell me what happened in the second part? I recorded it but it didn't work

Perseus said...

Squib - I watched the whole two episodes on You Tube.

And everyone - I've never heard of a 'wide-on' either... but I'll be using it from now on, that's for sure.

Ramon Insertnamehere said...

Squib, the judge hearing the case found - in very clear tones - that ID was not science, was clearly religious and could not be taught as science.

For which, he received a number of very charming death threats from followers of a religion that exhorts people to "turn the other cheek".

Go figure!

Good so it had a happy ending

Persey that feature is quite amazing, eh
